handwoven contemporary art, crafted to live in
your home for many years to come
made with diverse fibers that embody sustainability and nostalgia
Kate Laing is the artist behind Lionheart Canyon Studio, creating contemporary handwoven art from her home studio in Omaha, Nebraska. Inspired by her roots in the American Southwest, her work reflects the horizon lines, textures, and color stories of desert landscapes.
For over a decade, Kate has woven heirloom-quality pieces that weaves modern design with timeless craftsmanship. She is passionate about exploring the natural world, and also enjoys the comfort of returning to a cozy home. This sense of wild beauty merges with the tactile softness of her artwork.
a contemporary exploration
of fiber as sculpture
These new works embrace the process of intentionally manipulating the handwoven elements, once released from the tension of the loom. The woven artworks are ethereally framed by a natural birch wood panel, creating an opportunity for exciting new texture and dimension.
the 100 day project - handwoven sketches
Daily textural explorations created in a single studio session.
The handwoven sketch for Day One of the 100 Day Project. This artwork is approximately 5×7 inches, handwoven by Kate Laing with Italian art yarn, vintage fiber, recycled cotton cord, sari silk and wool pencil roving. These explorations are meant to be more sculptural, playing with texture and form even after the weaving is removed from the tension of the loom.
The handwoven sketches for this series are one-of-a-kind original works. They will come with a certificate of authenticity, signed by artist Kate Laing.
Display Options:
These are designed with the ability to be hung on the wall with a simple nail. However, you also have the option to upgrade the display, where artist Kate Laing will ethereally and securely mount the fiber element to a natural birch wood panel. All three methods of displaying are beautiful!
There are two size options to upgrade the display of your handwoven sketch:
Mount on the surface of a 5×7 birch wood panel (1 inch depth) - adds additional structure, while keeping focus on the artwork (little to no border of wood showing).
Mount on the surface of an 8×10 birch wood panel (1 inch depth) - adds additional structure and a sculptural aspect, while creating a border of natural wood as a natural framing of the artwork.
No adhesives or glue will be used to mount the fiber element. Instead, several small holes will be drilled through the panel at strategic points, and the weaving will be “sewn” onto the panel through those small holes. Holes and anchor threads will not be visible when the artwork is on display.
If you’d like to upgrade your display, there is an additional “Add” button to select underneath the “Add to Cart” button. On mobile, please scroll to the bottom of the listing to find this additional button.
